South Australian councils operate more than 170 Community Wastewater Management Systems (CWMS), many of which recycle treated wastewater for irrigation of public open spaces, sporting facilities, vineyards, crops and other beneficial uses. These schemes play an important role in supporting sustainable water management and reducing reliance on drinking water supplies.

As recycled water schemes evolve, councils are increasingly required to navigate technical, operational and regulatory requirements. Understanding treatment performance, monitoring, risk management, approvals and operational controls can be challenging, particularly for smaller councils with limited resources.

The Future Ready Reuse workshops have been designed to build capability across the sector. Through interactive presentations, discussions and activities, participants will develop a stronger understanding of wastewater treatment, recycled water management and the practical tools needed to support safe, compliant and future-ready schemes.

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

✔ Explain how health risks are managed using the multiple barrier approach.

✔ Interpret operational and verification monitoring to assess scheme performance

✔ Identify practical actions to improve the safety, compliance and future readiness of their own CWMS.

Workshop Format

Each workshop is a full-day, interactive session combining practical presentations, real-world examples, group discussions and activities.

Participants will be encouraged to ask questions, share experiences and apply the concepts to their own wastewater and recycled water schemes, while learning from the experiences of other councils.
